The Weekend Is Here

Final Friday night thoughts...

I still think guidance is too warm next week. GFS MOS products could be 10 degrees too warm on Tuesday and Wednesday; I learned years ago not to get suckered into following the GFS MOS products blindly during a pattern change.

I would imagine a number of places in north Alabama will hold in the 30s all day Tuesday. Same deal Friday and Saturday, December 17-18. Very cold. A few flurries are possible then, but no strong evidence of any snow or ice threat at this time.

Snow fans will be encouraged the 18Z run of the GFS today has a nice Gulf storm around December 22. Very interesting.

Have a nice weekend!

A New Face In The Weather Office

We are delighted to announce that Jason Simpson is the newest member of the ABC 33/40 weather staff.

Jason will join us on January 3 as the new "morning shift" meteorologist. He is current chief meteorologist at WTOK, Channel 11, in Meridian.

Jason interned with us here at ABC 33/40 when he was a meteorology student at Mississippi State five years ago, and is a native of Holly Pond in Cullman county.

Jason was the selection after a long, national search. His knowledge of the science is excellent; his on air delivery is smooth, and he is at his best during severe weather outbreaks. You will really enjoy getting to know him. Jason will be with us on the Storm Alert 2005 tour which will begin in late January (we will announce the schedule late this month).

I learned many years ago the secret to success in this business is to surround yourself with good people. Jason's addition to the team gives us more strength and depth in our weather operation!

Unusual Angry Looking Clouds

Just returned from our walking track photographing some very interesting cloud formations from the NE part of Trussville. Several unusual CB with anvil tops and thunder heard. Based on radar, the tops were only 10 to 12 thousand feet and still with an anvil top!

This is due, of course, to the very cold air aloft. I would estimate that the temperature at 10,000 feet (about 700 millibars) is now down to -5 or -7C (about 20 to 23 degrees F)

Sure made a great photo opportunity and I took a picture of the Old Crow Motel with a CB backdrop.

As you can tell, even though I have been in weather for what seems like 150 years, I still get excited about unusual cloud formations.

Weekend Time

When I checked it, I noticed I kept saying "Thanksgiving" when I meant to say "Christmas", when I was talking about weather toward the end of the month. Must be this sleepless fog I have been in.

Key word for the latter half of December remains cold. Nothing for the snow or ice fans to hang their hat on at this time, but the Gulf of Mexico looks rather nervous a number of times, which makes me nervous when Arctic air is in place.

But, nothing to suggest any wintry weather threat for at least the next seven days. Our first cold air surge arrives tonight and tomorrow, the next one Tuesday of next week, and the third one at the end of next week. With more to come after that!

Have a wonderful weekend. Talk a walk in the woods; spend some time with friends and family; get away from the computer. That is my plan.

I still think no more severe weather for 2004. Having said that, the 06Z run of the GFS tries to develop a thunderstorm event here around 12/22, but I think it bogus. Hard for a storm like that to form in the colder air. A storm might form, but the low would be placed much more to the south. We will be watching for more signs of a pre-Christmas storm, but model output is very very muddy on details right now.

The window for a snow/ice threat in the December 18-20 time frame might be closing, but the pattern still favors a cold latter half of December. Plenty of chances for winter weather fans to have a little event before the end of the year. A parade of Arctic air will be coming at us, and as a snow field develops over the northern U.S. and Canada they will be colder and colder.

Congrats to the Hoover Bucs the Oneonta Redskins on their title wins yesterday. I first met Josh Niblett (coach at Oneonta) when he was in high school down in Demopolis in the mid 80s. That kid had one of the most amazing arms I have ever seen (he was quarterback at Demopolis Academy)... wonder if he can still throw the ball 80 yards in the air.

Speaking of Demopolis, I will be pulling for the Tigers tonight in their game out at the Met...
