Some Good Summer Help

I do appreciate Drew McCombs writing his series here on the “Great Plains Storm Chase Adventure” back in May. Drew is a meteorology student at Mississippi State University, and is from Center Point (a graduate of Erwin High School).

Drew has been here in our office since late May, and he has been a great addition to our office this year. Drew handles a wide range of daily tasks, including sending our WeatherFax, updating the ABC 33/40 web site with J.B. Elliott’s afternoon forecast package, and preparing the weather graphics you see on the 5:00 and 6:00 newscasts on ABC 33/40. This takes a load off my back, and gives me a little breathing room as I handle podcasts, vodcasts, webcasts, blog posts, and radio audio for two dozen stations around the nation (as far west as Phoenix, and as far east as Jacksonville!). Drew will be leaving in a week or so, headed back to Starkville getting ready for the fall semester and more adventures in meteorological education.

My very first weather intern, about 15 years ago, was none other than our current weekend meteorologist, John Oldshue. John was also a student at Mississippi State. I figure at least 100 college students have passed through here during the summer program over the years, and many have gone on to big markets and are living wonderful family lives. The morning meteorologist here at ABC 33/40, Jason Simpson, is also a former intern and a Mississippi State grad. Guess you get the idea it pays to be an intern here if you want to work in the weather office!

Our summer intern program is open to meteorology majors only; preferably those about to enter their junior or senior years. We begin to take applications in the spring, and the program runs from May through July!
