First Podcast

On this quiet weather night, we yet dive into technology and offer a test "podcast":

Today's podcast is an audio forecast for use on your computer or MP3 player, valid for Wednesday May 25.

No promise this will work... just a test of some RSS scripts. I will explain all of this on a post tomorrow once we can be sure we are up and running properly!

A Cool Change

The Tuesday afternoon web video is on the server:

http://beta.abc3340.com/weather/video.hrb

"If there's one thing in my life that's missing
It's the time that I spend alone
Sailing on the cool and bright clear water
It's kind of a special feeling
When you're out on the sea alone
Staring at the full moon, like a lover
Time for a cool change
I know that it's time for a cool change
Now that my life is so prearranged
I know that it's time for a cool change"

Anyone remember that song by the Little River Band in the late 70s? I played "Top 40" songs on the radio from 1973-1978 growing up in Tuscaloosa at the BIG 1230, WTBC. Those songs were the soundtrack of my young life. I actually didn't really like "Cool Change" that much; my favorite LRB song was "Reminiscing". I think I need to do a 70s retro podcast one of these days!

One way or another, a COOL CHANGE is ahead for Alabama, with most places dropping into the 50 to 55 degree range by daybreak tomorrow. Some of the colder spots will wind up in the upper 40s. Not many more of these mornings left until the fall.

I really don't see any reason to mention any risk of rain in the forecast through Friday at this point. Temperatures will slowly moderate, but the weather will remain fairly comfortable.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Latest run (12Z) of the GFS looks pretty dry for Saturday and Sunday, which will make our pals at the SEC happy (the SEC baseball tournament is this weekend at the Hoover Met). A few showers could show up Sunday, but it still looks like the best chance of showers or storms will hold off until Memorial Day as a disturbance moves eastward along the Gulf coast. That same system could also bring a pretty good soaking to the coastal towns like Gulf Shores and Destin on Monday, but between now and then the weather should be very nice on the coast.

NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS continues the trend of wet weather for Alabama and the deep south much of next week. The period from May 30 through June 4 looks wet; we sure could use the rain.

Cooler Days Ahead

The Tuesday morning web video is on the server:

While today will be pretty warm with temperatures well up in the 80s, humidity values will be lower making for a more comfortable day. Then tonight, cooler air rotates into the state, and we are talking lows down in the low 50s early tomorrow. Some of the colder spots could reach the upper 40s. Not bad for late May in Alabama.

Looks like most communities won't see 80 tomorrow as the cooler air flows in here. The dry air will mean lots of sunshine.

The latest run of the GFS shows a little vort max over Muscle Shoals on Thursday, and it tries to spit out a few rain showers around here. The NAM doesn't show this feature, and with the air being so dry for the moment we won't mention any chance of showers on Thursday. Friday at this point looks dry and comfortable, and any showers will be very isolated.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: We should be in good shape on Saturday, but rain will return before the long weekend is over. The latest GFS moves moisture back into the state on Sunday, and we will probably go ahead and bring back a chance of rain on Sunday on the afternoon forecast package later today. Monday will be mostly cloudy with a few showers and storms around here.

WET WEEK? The GFS sure looks wet next week, in the May 30-June 3 time frame. That is probably not very convenient, but wouldn't that be great to knock out that five inch rain deficit for the year before we get into the long hot summer. Most importantly, that would get the soil good and moist which will help to keep the summer heat in check.

INTERN SEASON: Need to mention that the summer intern season is here; you will probably see some posts here from new names; these are students in the meteorology program at Mississippi State that spend some time with us during the next couple of months!
