Thunderstorms Intensifying over Mississippi
April 7, 2006, 4:17 pm
John and I are located just west of Winfield in Marion County for his 5 o'clock live shot.
A dangerous situation continues across the South late this afternoon. Numerous tornadoes with damage and even fatalities have been reported in Middle Tennessee.
So far the situation over Alabama has been calm. But thunderstorm activity continues to intensify over North Mississppi.
An intensifying thunderstorm is over the northeast corner of Mississippi southwest of Iuka. A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Prentiss County. This storm will clip the extreme northwest corner of Alabama. A tornado warning has just been issued for Colbert and Lauderdale Counties.
The most dangerous storms over North Mississippi are a complex over Union and Pontotoc Counties, west and northwest of Tupelo. Radar indicates a tornado north of Pontotoc and another southwest of Booneville. The storms are moving northeast at 45 mph. These storms will eventually affect Northwest Alabama from Franklin County to the north.
There are no thunderstorms threatening the rest of the western border of Alabama at this time.
The airmass over Alabama is moderately unstable. Thunderstorms will continue to spread into western sections of the state during the evening hours. They will be severe with the enhanced possibility that they could produce tornadoes, very large hail and damaging winds.
A PDS Tornado Watch continues for most of North and Central Alabama until 8 p.m. CDT.
All Alabamians should pay close attention to the latest severe weather information through the overnight tonight.

From The Weather Office
April 7, 2006, 3:07 pm
A quick update from the weather office...
Sorry for the blog being bogged down today... the system simply can't handle the large amount of traffic. We will work on a solution this week so hopefully this won't happen again...
Tornado damage in Tennessee is extensive and severe. Gallatin hit hard; major damage to homes and people being pulled out of them. A large tornado was reported on the ground north of Columbia, TN within the hour.
See all of the Tennessee damage reports here:
http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/tn/public.html
Storms firing rapidly over Mississippi and moving this way; we expect severe storms to enter Northwest Alabama within the next 60 to 90 minutes.
Remember we will be up on the live stream on if you don't have a TV tonight...
Oldshue and Peters are in the field; Simpson is in the office here with me. Stay tuned...
