Always tough forecasting the clearing process after a big upper storm like this one; today there have been some very nice intervals of sunshine over east Alabama, while areas west of I-65 have been socked in by clouds all day. All of Alabama should see a good deal of sunshine tomorrow and Sunday with afternoon temperatures well into the 70s.
NEXT STORM SYSTEM: The GFS continues to suggest the greatest chance of severe storms here will be from about 8:00 Monday night through 8:00 Tuesday morning. I still think this might be too fast; I would not be shocked if the GFS slows the system down in model runs over the weekend.
The 12Z GFS shows a very favorable setup for severe storms on Monday over Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. This looks like a high end moderate risk, maybe even a high risk situation.
The negative tilt trough seems to weaken a bit on Tuesday to the northwest of Alabama, but there is no doubt there will be some type of severe weather threat with the system here. It could be very significant, and we will update the situation here in coming days as the system develops to the west of Alabama.

April 8... that date will always bring back memories of Birmingham's F5 tornado tragedy in 1998. Scroll down and read my post about it on the blog.
We will hang on to the chance of some light rain today as the big upper low moves through Georgia and South Carolina today. Nothing heavy, no hail; just some light rain at times. We might see some peeks of sun late today, but no promises.
The weekend should be great with lots of sun and temperatures well into the 70s on both days.
NEXT STORM SYSTEM: The GFS continues to show a potent severe weather setup on Monday for Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Very strong, negative tilt upper trough, lots of low level moisture, strong wind fields. It all seems to be coming together, so once our friends to the west will be under the gun. Should be a moderate risk kind of day. Maybe even a high risk.
Those showers and storms should begin moving into west Alabama at some point Monday night. The GFS weakens the upper system a bit and places it a little more northward on Tuesday. If this is correct, we will have a chance of severe weather on Tuesday, but parameters don't look as ominous for us compared to areas to the west on Monday.
Once we get within 48 hours of the event, we will be able to be much more specific on the threat.
In the longer range, the GFS pushes the storm track to the northern U.S. toward the latter half of the month, which would mean warmer and drier weather for us if this trend is correct.... but the GFS has been all over the road in the longer term, and confidence is low. Seems like a pattern change is coming, but no consistency in model output now in the 8 to 15 day time frame.
