The Heat is Hot ! !

The Saturday map discussion video is on the server at:

No, I don't plan to sing any songs to go with this map discussion - just stealing a line or title for it. Heat is the main news today and will be for tomorrow, too. A large dome of high pressure seen on the 500 milllibar chart with the 594 contour line (that's 5,940 meters for the height of the 500 millibar pressure surface) circled over much of the Southeast U. S. That large high is responsible for heat advisories today for many areas as heat index values climb to and above the 110 mark. This is a point at which heat can become very dangerous, so if you are planning outdoors activities, be sure to be mindful of the heat. Drink plenty of water - that's water, not just liquids - and take frequent breaks so you won't overheat.

A cold front is still progged to move into and across much of Alabama on Monday - just a hair later that was previously forecast. The front stalls out over South Alabama so we won't see a complete air mass change, but we do expect to see some dryer air filter into Central Alabama. Temperatures will also drop back a bit - probably to around 90 degrees or so. But thicknesses don't change much.

The relief stays with us for a couple of days, but then moisture returns toward mid and late week and scattered showers return to the forecast.

Tropics are fairly quiet. A couple of disturbed areas are being watched - one north of Hispaniola and the Leeward Islands and one in the western Caribbean. There is also a large convective complex coming off the African continent, but so far those large disturbances have not done much.

Heading out this morning for Huntsville and the annual hamfest being held there. It is always a treat to get to see folks at these events since I don't get to see them much throughout the year. The Sunday video map discussion should be posted by 8 am tomorrow morning.
