New Orleans Update

From the WWL Blog:

8:04 P.M. - Mayor Nagin: Unhappy that the helicopters slated to drop 3,000-pound bags into the levee never showed up to stop the flow of water. Too many chiefs calling shots he says.

Pumps at 17th street canal have failed and water will continue pouring into the city. Nine feet of water is expected on St. Charles Avenue that will be nine feet high. Water is expected to spread throughout the east bank of Orleans and possibly Jefferson Parish.

The mayor is saying that the water in New Orleans will rise to the level of Lake Pontchartrain. This will put much of the city under 9 feet of water. This will also put the French Quarter under water.

Can someone wake us all up from this nightmare??? The news gets worse and worse. This is like a horrible catastrophe movie, but hopefully things will begin to improve in all affected areas in time...

Since he wouldn't call the shot to evacuate last Saturday night, (See "Waiting Too Late?" from Saturday @ 6:45 p.m.,) maybe somebody else needs to call these shots. Is he waiting for his lawyers to tell him if he can talk to the Army Corp of Engineers?

BTW, I trust the Corps more than the politicians. They will make an intelligent decision about whether adding weight to the levee will cause more damage then good.

Mayor Nagin is an idiot as well as a corrupt politician. But...the majority of the people of New Orleans put him in office. I compare this to our pitiful mayor and city council.

Mr. Nagin needs to be voted out and get someone in there who can make timely and effective decisions.

you know i thought the same thing about nagin...... i think ALL people in office should be REQUIRED to take basic meterology classes. he obviously is clueless. even though no one knew exactly where latrina would land (tho we had a pretty good idea!!) he knew the risks, and should not have taken chances and waited so late.

I am by no means defending anyone, but don't you think that there are SO many bad things happening in New Orleans and outlying areas, that there are probably 2 negative things for every 1 positive thing that happens. It is not easy to make decisions for these people right now. Let's just pray for EVERYONE down there, for everyone including the governor to the mayor of New Orleans to the average citizens. Also, let's just be glad the ole Ham is ABOVE sea level with no huge lakes near downtown.
