Quite A Blog Post

I have been going over blog posts during and before Katrina's landfall. I found this one by Bill Murray to be most interesting. It was originally posted Saturday night, August 27 at 11:45 p.m.

Bill hit the nail on the head. Big time.

Waiting Too Late?

I am thoroughly amazed at an interview that I just heard with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin on WWL radio. He said that he was considering a mandatory evacuation of the city. Considering? With the official National Hurricane Ceneter track showing a Category Four hurricane, perhaps even a Category FIVE hurricane moving directly over a city that takes 72 hours to evacuate? He said that the city’s attorneys were in consultation about the legalities of such an order. Legalities? Wouldn’t that be something you would contemplate in advance? Not 48 hours before landfall. What would be the criteria that would make such an action automatic?

Mayor Nagin said that the Governor had recommended that he talk to Max Mayfield at the National Hurricane Center. Hello! I would have had a hotline installed directly to Max’s cell phone. The Mayor said that Max Mayfield told him this was the storm that everyone has feared for New Orleans for many, many years. Max said that he had been in the business for 31 years and that this was the real deal. Still tonight, traffic on evacuation routes in Southeast Lousiana was amazingly light. Will tomorrow morning’s evacuation order come too late?

All I have heard from local emergency managers in Southeast Louisiana is the looming disaster that is New Orleans and a powerful hurricane. I have had heard that emergency managers say they will need thousands of body bags when a major hurricane pushes a 20-25 foot storm surge into Lake Ponchartrain and over the city’s levee system. Hopefully that will not come true.

I have another fear. That people on the Mississippi and Alabama coasts will take Katrina lightly because of all the media coverage and focus on New Orleans. A storm surge of 15-20 feet or higher will occur in that vulnerable area of the Mississippi coast around Waveland, Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis. Those names sound familiar? They were made famous by Hurricane Camille’s 27 foot storm surge in 1969.

Strange! I have been reading back through the blogs also tonight. I remember this one from last weekend and several more than hit the nail on the head. Sadly, the warnings were taken for granted and now many people are dead.
You guys at ABC 33/40 are great for keeping us informed--on TV and on the internet. Forget about what some of the critics say--evidentally, you are a valuable asset.

I have given the link to that post to plenty of people over the past week who have wondered if anyone had any idea about what was going to happen.

Hindsight actually seems rather blurry this week... everyone keeps forgetting that our friendly neighborhood weatherfolk called it far before Katrina got to land.

yup!! i agree. i think all city and state leaders in the country should be trained to spot weather and it's potential consequesences. it seems in this case, ignorance was a problem.

Yes, if JB will check his email, I nailed this one as far as strength and landfall. My prediction was..as strong or stronger than Camille and pretty much the same landfall area. I'm sorry I was so on the mark, it's sorry still that nobody paid any attention to all the predictions.
I'm fed up with "Blame Bush" retoric..as my Grandma said..Remember with that one finger pointing out there are 4 others looking at you!

Yes, they ALL need to remember this when they go to Bush-bashing! Geez -- what a mess! HE was the one that dropped the ball. Also, I'm fed up with these folks yacking about not getting in there fast enough -- hello?!?!? Everything was FLOODED, they couldn't get in there any faster. And to think that some folk think it's another race issue....good grief!

Speaking of.... did anyone else see the guy on CNN last night that was interviewed that said he and others think that the levee in the industrial area was blown up by the government to save the more 'affluent' neighborhoods, including the French Quarter?

Sorry -- I'm off my soapbox now. :)

People are always looking for someone to blame. Hummm. As for the race issue, this is STUPID!!!
I heard a tale of the church here in Cullman feeding the Evacuees and on lady complained because they were out of Fried Chicken. They had Chicken casserole. I think they should be happy with what they get. As mom use to say, either eat what is at the table or go hungry. Don't get me wrong. I feel so sorry for the families, but I get so tired of hearing derogatory statements that have to do with race, who is at fault, etc. Lets just pick up the pieces of our lives, go on with what God has given us another chance and learn from our mistakes.

I know this is the time we all want to play armchair quarterback with things that could have possibly been done differently. I guess I don't understand why people just sat there after the storm. I know there were some people that were not able to fend for themselves, but out of all those people that had to be removed, there were a lot of them that could have walked out. Just start walking!! I know if I was aware that news teams were driving into the city, I would have started a hike out of there on the same roads. I'm sure the reporters would tell you where to go. Seems like that would have been a more sensible desperate measure than living in that nasty water surrounded by the dying.

Plain and simple, this tragedy in NO is the mayors fault. Red tape, govt rules and other things should take a backseat to getting your people out of there. If this idiot had been in contact with the NHC, why isnt anyone reporting that? He's trying to push the blame off on agencies of the federal govt...when it's his fault to start with. Heads should roll, and his should be at the head of the line. But, as always, he'll be spared persecution when the NAACP, Jesse Jackson, and the Urban League (of which the former mayor of NO is now the head of), come to his rescue and cry the all important word of racism. Racism, no. Stupidity, rampant. Its too bad that thousands of people had to die due to one mans ignorance.

a few quick comments. first, the mayor and leadership in NO were wrong in not evacuating earlier. second, the response time of aid to people in those areas was INADEQUATE. I am not pointing fingers at anyone, but to think that we live in the USA and have to let our own people suffer like that is appalling. Someone posted earlier that the reason aid to the region was slow was because of FLOODING. that is ABSURD!!! The moment we did decide to put a full effort into our relief plan, which was IMO two days late, then things started turning for the better. If FLOODING was the main cause, then we should have had hundreds of military personnel lined up around the waters in NO and not nowhere to be seen. If 8 feet of water is enough to stop our country from doing there job, then where is all of our tax money going?? Lastly race should not be considered an issue in this situation, but it sure is hard to avoid when 90% of the people u see are one race and SES.

There is blame to go around, first clearly the mayor did not give the mandatory evacuation soon enough. But the federal governments response in embarassing! First the president is riding his bike until wednesday, 2 days after the hurricane, Cheney is in WY, cheif of staff is in Maine, Sec of state is watching a play in N.Y. and shopping for expensive shoes, so who is actually in charge?...Second the guy running FEMA, is a total clueless idiot, how can a guy who got fired from running a horse assocation get a job as the head of FEMA, by contributing millions to the presidents campaign thats how!...It is mind bogeling to hear that FEMA has a hard time getting in N.O. when you see all of the networks out there reporting from there. There is a total lack of responsibilty with this administration, from Iraq, to Katrina, someone stand up and be accountable!
