Autumn Did Not Arrive Today

Today was the first official day of autumn.

But it did not arrive.

I looked out the window all day, looking for Autumn.

I could not find it anywhere.

Today's high at Birmingham Airport was 90. It was the 12th day so far in September with 90 or higher. In fact, the high for the first 22 days of the month has averaged 90.

Two days had 95.

We were short-changed.

Ironically, 22 years ago today, 1983, we had a low of 39. That is the earliest on record for Birmingham to have a low in the 30s.

I hope winter does not arrive before autumn...

I couldn't find autumn at all today either! In fact, my 5 year old who has been home from school sick, was confused about why it was so hot on the first day the leaves are supposed to fall off the tree. Wish my life was as simple as worrying about what day the leaves are supposed to fall off the tree...what child like faith!!

Sorry you didn't get Autumn..usually I'm not real anxious for Fall as I love the summer and do not at all like the cold, drab winter..this year I'll make an exception! I really want some rain, the hills look so bad.
Last note on the hurricane, this makes two I got the landfall exactly on..that's scary and days before anybody else. I emailed you Mr. Elliot with Katrina prediction and I posted last night on this blog and the day before on another I read daily on Rita's exact location..whew..knew and know folks effected by both. Saying a prayer for all concerned before I go to sleep tonight..

I live in Kendallville, IN. 30 miles N. of Ft. Wayne. We have had highs in the mid to upper 80's for the last few days. That is very warm for this area in late Sept.

Debby its still not certain where Rita will make landfall at. Better wait before you say she landed where you predicted.

...EFFECTS OF HURRICANE RITA TO BE FELT ACROSS ALABAMA...

HURRICANE RITA IS CURRENTLY A DANGEROUS CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE OVER
THE CENTRAL GULF OF MEXICO WITH MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS NEAR 150 MPH.
THIS POWERFUL STORM WILL TURN TOWARD THE NORTHWEST AS HIGH
PRESSURE OVER THE SOUTHERN UNITED STATES SHIFTS EASTWARD. AT THIS
TIME...HURRICANE RITA IS FORECAST TO MAKE LANDFALL NEAR THE SABINE
RIVER ALONG THE TEXAS AND LOUISIANA STATE LINE SATURDAY MORNING AS A
CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE WITH 140 MPH WINDS.

DUE TO THE FAR REACHING EFFECTS OF HURRICANE RITA...THE OUTERBANDS
SHOULD REACH THE AREA BY LATE FRIDAY NIGHT...AND STAY WITH US
THROUGH SUNDAY. THESE OUTERBANDS COULD PRODUCE ISOLATED TORNADOES
ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA.

SOME AREAS WILL RECEIVE LOCALLY HEAVY RAINS FROM THIS BANDING...BUT
FLOODING IS NOT A CONCERN AT THIS TIME. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT
A LAKE WIND ADVISORY MAY BE NEEDED BECAUSE OF THE PRESSURE GRADIENT
BETWEEN HURRICANE RITA AND A SURFACE RIDGE FORECAST TO BE IN PLACE IN
THE NORTHEAST...HOWEVER STRONG SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NOT EXPECTED.

STAY TUNED FOR NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECASTS AND UPDATES THROUGH
NOAA WEATHER RADIO AND COMMERCIAL SOURCES AS THIS HISTORICAL WEATHER
EPISODE CONTINUES TO UNFOLD.
