Update at 4:15 pm--Lots of Alabama Getting Wet

At 4:15 on this Christmas Eve afternoon, a line of showers and thunderstorms extended from near Birmingham southward through West Shelby County to mid-way between Centreville and Clanton and then into Dallas and Wilcox County.

The stronger storms were in the south part of the line.

At one point earlier this afternoon there were Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for Clarke, Choctaw and Marengo County. It was believed that some of the storms may have nickle size hail.

Behind the line of showers and storms, rain is extensive over West Alabama. It has been raining over some of that area for several hours. Based on radar estimates, as much as three inches of rain has fallen over SE Marion County, in NW Alabama, with as much as two inches over South Lamar County.

Another area of rain was over East Alabama, places like Anniston, Gadsden, Roanoke and Wedowee.

Rain will be getting heavier in the Birmingham area for the remainder of this afternoon.

Hey, look at that! It's rain, not snow. What a surprise, especially considering the low for today was in the 40s. You know, if I had a nickel for every time James Spann said it might could possibly maybe snow . . .

Merry Christmas, folks.

Merry Christmas, J.B. and Brian and everyone!
I've had trouble getting in the spirit this year, but I'm finally there.
Taking a break in preparations to check the forecast.
Almost 3/4 inch rain in Bluff Park so far, thunder picked up again a little while ago, but calm now.
I love weather, it interests me. Thunder on Christmas eve is unusual and fun, and let's hope for enough rain to decrease the deficit!!
My best wishes and hopes to everyone for a beautiful and happy Christmas!!

Ok... Rain today, but what concerns me is the setup for midweek. A little early for "springtime" storms and a later than normal for "second season" storms, but it looks as if we could be in for a supercell or two (or four or ....)
