An Alaskan Paradox

Fort Yukon is in Northern Alaska, north of the Brooks Range. It can get hot in summer but it can get so cold in winter that even the polar bears think of sunny, warm Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Fort Yukon holds the all time high temperature for Alaska of 100 degrees. It is the only weather station to ever reach 100. (By the way, that ties the all time high for Hawaii)

This morning, the Fort Yukon low was 154 degrees colder than that--a bitter 54 below zero.

A few other numbers:

-54 also at Chandalar Lake, Alaska
-42 at Snowshoe Lake, Alaska (name matches the weather)
-52 at Eagle, Alaska
-48 at Bettles, Alaska with 19 inches of snow
-45 at Dawson, in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada
-15 at Gunnison, Colo., coldest in the Lower 48

Funny to see computers go astray at times. One sent out a high of 127 and a low of 119 degrees for Big Bear Park, Alaska...

Hey JB did you here that story on fox 6 news on the earth warming up? They say the earth has warmed up 1 deg. in the past 30 years. Is there any truth to this?

From 1 Bama Man to another... I think it's true, but probably not due to what many people out there attribute it to. It could just be a natural occurrence and not human induced. Time will bear that part of it out... although possibly not in our lifetimes.

Sorry... one other thing. I saw a story some time ago about the size of the glaciers in Glacier National Park in Northern Montana. There was a picture of them taken in the 1950's side by side with a picture taken today from the exact same place. The glaciers are almost gone now... literally! It's amazing. At least in that part of the world some warming has to be taking place.

My personal belief is that the cities are getting larger (urban heat islands) and all the trees are being cut down for new homes and more highways, large signs that light up...this all traps heat. Just my 2 cents :)

I think the earth is a huge place. I don't think our comparitively little cities will make a difference. I mean, the earth was warm, then we were in an Ice Age, then we were warm again. I don't think New York City was around back then. The earth naturally has cycles and I just don't believe that we the people have anything to do with it.

There's my 2 cents.
