59 Below Zero!

That was the official low at Chandalar Lake Alaska today! A short list:

59 below zero at Chandalar Lake
58 below at Fort Yukon
51 below at Eagle

NORTHWEST CANADA
51 below zero at Mayo in the Yukon Territory

A FEW OTHER NOTES

* Not a drop of rain this month to date in Phoenix and Tuscon

* Only 1.4 inches of snow all winter at Flagstaff in the North Arizona high country. Most of that fell yesterday.

* January so far running an amazing 15 degrees above average at Alexandria, Minn., and about the same in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul.

WOW! 59 degrees is cool, especially if there's a breeze! I can't even imagine what -59 would feel like! You could die walking out to get the mail. Do people actually live there year round?

Craig...
Yes, year-round living in those places, especially Fort Yukon.

Most of the time when it is 50 to 60 below there is little wind. However, further north over the open tundra north of the Brooks Range and toward the Arctic Coast, the wind is almost always blowing.

That is why the wind chill at Deadhorse has been running around 62 below zero today.

Like you say, walking out to get the mail could give you frostbite in seconds unless heavily protected.

Hey everyone, I read the blogg everyday and it enjoy it thoroughly!!! I have to make a comment that I grew up in Michigan, where we had a tempature at one time of -35 below, the wind shield factor was -65 to -75 blow freezing. Of course, there was a frostbite warning, if you had an inch of skin exposed for more than one minute, you would be frostbitten, now THAT IS COLD!!! thanks for all that you do!

Hi Cheryl In what part of Michigan did you live? I have relatives all over Michigan. Wyandotte, Battle Creek New Boston, Grand Rapids. I love it there. I was born here in Alabama but I love to go there as often as I can. Ever been skiing in Cannonsburg?
