Afternoon Thoughts...

After a review of the 12Z data set... I don't see much need to change our forecast at this point...

A chance of one to two inches of snow north of a line from Hamilton to Oneonta to Jacksonville to Heflin.

Having said that, here is the snow accumulation graphic from the 12Z NAM:

Will we have to go to school tomorrow? There is a chance some systems will consider calling off classes for the day, but the best chance of that will probably be in counties like Cullman, Blount, Etowah, Cherokee, and DeKalb (among others to the north of Birmingham).

As always, this is a close call. It certainly won't be a major, long term snow event. Most roads will only be wet where snow falls, but some bridges will become icy where surface temperatures drop to freezing.

I still think there will be significantly better opportunities for snow in the next two weeks. The pattern looks cold and unsettled, and the GFS looks way too warm in the longer range MOS as usual. I will be much more specific on these threats early tomorrow morning with my Monday morning video and discussion, which will be posted by 6:00 a.m.

As we enjoy the Super Bowl we will post updates on the situation for tomorrow morning, so stay tuned!

Interesting, Kenny, for sure.

But I just don't think Shelby/Tusc or Jeff counties will see ANY snow. These *threats* happen quite a bit and even a few hours away from the event, the models often have it wrong...sometimes WAY wrong.

Anyway, we shall see.

KEEP HOPEING!!!!!!!!

"Remember a great surprise April snow in 1987. I was listening to the NOAA Weather Radio before bed. The forecaster reported that temperatures would rise during the night. When I awakened at 4 a.m., it was snowing furiously. About seven inches of heavy, wet snow fell"

Maybe this will happen?????????????????????????????????????????

Ive lived through several snows here in Alabama. One thing I have noticed its sometimes worse on the roads than expected or forcasted. Bridges with creeks under them are very bad. Where I live there are several creeks and streams with small bridges that get icy. Just a couple of weeks ago there was black ice all over the place. I even heard it was very bad travel in Birmingham. So I hope whom ever is in charge of calling the shots as far as schools go take it seriously. Does anyone know exactly what time all this is going to take place. I would like to get up early and look outside. I live in Alexandria north of Anniston...Thanks

That's a very good point, Brandon!

Even though the models are often wrong, as I constantly say, sometimes they are wrong as far as intensity and or exact location of an event..but the basic predicted event DOES happen.

In fact, I remember one time when they were saying some snow for Bham and rain for areas south... turned out though, Clanton to Montgomery area got snow and Bham didn't

These things are always strange. I'm not convinced anything will happen (mainly b/c Tusc is at 50 deg this afternoon...gonna be hard to cool that down to snow levels). However, I'm gonna be watching all night tonight... Just in case ;)

Watching the Super Bowl..Go Sea Hawks!!!! I did not enjoy the National Anthem. In my opinion that was a disgrace and the song should be done the way it was written. It sounded horrible. Does anyone agree?

Brandon...I agree. Neville and Aretha butchered it. Sounded off-key, late, and unrehearsed. They should sing and not moan
