Another Update--10:45 pm

Things are beginning to move fast.

Faster than we expected.

At 10:45 pm, ABC 33/40 Doppler radar indicated precipitation in West Alabama as far east as Jasper, Tuscaloosa, Moundville and Demopolis. It is moving steadily eastward. At this rate, we should see some type of precipitation in Birmingham before midnight.

A report from the public indicated heavy sleet in Fayette at 10:19 pm

A cold rain has been reported in Tuscaloosa.

Some reports:

34 degrees in Huntsville
30 in Cullman, Oxford, Pell City
28 in Fort payne
34 in Birmingham
31 in Anniston
41 in Columbus, Miss.
40 in Tuscaloosa
36 in Fayette with sleet
35 in Eva (Cullman County)
27.5 in Trussville (intersection of 25th Ave., and Sweeny Hollow Road)

Clouds starting to move into the Pell City area. Temp is up to 32 degrees. Temp is definitely moving in the wrong direction. Enough for me- if I wake up and see a white ground, I'm rolling over and going back to sleep!

Hope isn't lost yet.....evaporative cooling effect should bring the temperatures back down after the rain starts to fall....then the fun begins! lol

Temp has risen in Vinemont also...from 32.0 to 33.4 over the past 2 1/2 hours...radar shows something is falling, but a quick, cold run outside, reveals it is not reaching the ground....

You know, in a way, I wished we'de get snow annually. Maybe then it wouldn't be such a dramatic event.

Do northern states activate EMA for a forecast calling for 1" of snow?

Also, I keep hearing of a southerly flow adding moisture to the system. Wouldn't this be a source of warmth?

J.B. in a professionals perspective with this part starting earlier could this mean a better or worse situation of accumalating snow ? With me being in Hueytown I really don't expect much....but with some giving their 2 cents worth on what could happen , wondering what yours might be ? ( trying to keep misunderstandings & misleadings down )

But wouldn't the moisture coming from Mississippi be warmer and decrease the chances or amount of accumulation?

Don't like snow.

coppertop....with the increased moisture we should get "evaporative cooling" which will cause the temps to drop down to right around where they were before the clouds moved in. I wouldn't be surprised to hear the sleet in some of these areas to change over to snow in the next 1-2 hours.

Currently in Winfield it is 35 degrees with light snow/sleet falling. It was sleeting hard enough earlier to cover my back porch, but most has melted. JB how much do you except the temps to fall from where they are now? Update, it is sleeting very hard now, I am in Winfield close to the 129 and old 78 intersection.

Well... I'm tired and it's gonna do whatever it's gonna do.

I'll dream of an unexpected warming trend that keeps the snow to our north.

If I had to guess, I'd say accumulations will be well north of I-20 and west of I-65 and we'll awake in Birmingham to a damp, cold morning.

Good night all.

I agree with coppertop...the ground is too warm and temps too high for this to cause major problems in the Birmingham area...FOX6 on Red Mountain is a higher elevation than most of us...why all the hoopla? It's gonna do what it's gonna do.

We need to wait on the systems later in the week.

The warming trend continues here at Eva. As of 11:37, the temperature is up to 36.9 with no precipitation as of yet. Radar shows echoes, but none of it is reaching the ground here. If evaporative cooling doesn't set in in a big way, I'm afraid there's going to be some embarassed meteorologists in the Huntsville market tomorrow morning. Hopefully not though. :) Well, I'm out for the night. It will do what it will do.
