The Rain Just Keeps Coming Down--10:45 am Update

A two-hour power nap works wonders for body and soul.

Downside is that when I am short on sleep, I get silly.

Another one of those days when it seems like it is raining over the whole wide world. It is raining almost everywhere over the north third of Alabama.

A good old fashioned winter rain.

Don't ask me what a new fashioned winter rain is.

Because I do not know.

At 10:45 am there was a wide band of moderate to heavy rain across the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham-Anniston area. Moving east.

Temperatures warmed enough so that the NWS cancelled the winter weather advisories. Most temperatures are well up in the 30s now except in the extreme northeast.

It was 34 at Fort Payne Airport at 10. Up on Lookout Mountain, at Mentone, at an elevation of 1765 feet it was 32. But not much precipitation in that area. Atop Mt. Cheaha it was 37.

We will post an updated list of rainfall early this afternoon. We get a lot more reports at midday.

I'm not going to send hate mail, but if I were a meteorologist I would be embarassed to know that a complete amateur (me) predicted all rain for bham.

JB,

If the temp had been below 32 at the 850 millibars and below freezing at the surface, and with the amount of rain we have had, we would have had a MAJOR snow.

Maybe next time.

You are correct, Chuck. In fact if the whole temperature profile had been just a few degrees lower, 10 to 15 inches of snow would not have been out of the question. Of course, with marginal temperatures there would have been some melting.

Ya know, living in Al all of my 38 yrs has taught me something. It has taught me that their are professionals who do a fantastic job with our weather and their are those who like to do their own "predicting" but the fact remains that when there is a slight probability of winter weather people need to be aware. I too didn't figure it would snow BUT the fact remains that it was setting up for the possibility and THAT is what makes the difference between those of us who do our own weather forcasting and the pros. It is a good thing that the people in AL are able to listen to the right guys and not us.

I know one thing the rain is comeing down hard here in Pelham. Now if the temperature had been cold enough this rain would have been snow. Temperature is holding at 38.0.

I too, was so disappointed without the snow. When I went to bed in Walker county, it was 29 degrees. So, when it started raining, I was truly suprised. No sleet even. But, although, I was disappointed in the weather, as many are, there is no reason to be upset with our weather guys. They do an awesome job! Alabama has some incredibly tricky weather patterns to try to figure out. Ground hog says we have six more weeks, so hopefully, we will see some snow before the season is over.

Hey Bo,

Great prediction! You flip a coin, or what? Please share your amateur wisdom with everyone, I feel confident we all could learn from your greatness. I have no problems with a blind squirrel finding a nut - but does the squirrel have to thump his chest at his good fortune?

Your pal,
Freddie

Settle down people. We will get a good snowstorm in the next two weeks. Just be patient. Good things come to those that wait. Keep the Faith

I am just sitting here trying to imagine the scene outside right now if the temp was 10 degrees colder. We would be under 16 inches by now!

I don't like snow and wan't unhappy with an all rain event.

I do recognize the difficulty in predicting winter weather in Alabama. In the back of my mind, I feared a set-up last night similar to 1993.

The only thing I don't care for with forecasting such events is the dramatic presentations, be it snow or thunderstorms. I think as a whole, this has toned down considerably in the Birmingham area but at one time you would have thought the world was going to end when such events were forecasted.

Either that or the weather staffs own stock in the local bread and milk distributors.

What's wrong with snow? Just don't like it.

As a kid I enjoyed it but ever since 93, I can't stand it. I've been to New York, Colorado, and North Carolina when it snowed and enjoyed it. Just something about Alabama snow.

I can't remember loosing power due to snow up until 93. Stuck in a house without power for three days and then finally was able to get off our hill. Then it was another seven days until power was restored. Froze my tail off.

If our area could handle snow better, I may change my opinion. But until then, a .5 inch will shut it all down. It's ridiculous to have to activate EMA for the possibility of up to 1 inch of snow in the forecast.

Don't like snow.

Hey coppertop I can see why you don't like snow the 93 storm was a bad one. But let's face it the amount of snow we got in 93 I don't think we will ever see that much snow here again. So as far as a little snow just 6-8 inches is enough for me.

I hope so! And hope is all we have in Alabama. I've just got to stop building it up so much. I do have to say that my gut was telling me that it wasn't going to happen.
It's better when you're not expecting it. I didn't know anything was going on the storm of '93. Maybe I need to lay low and stop obsessing.
Anyway, this snow wouldn't have been pretty with rain chasing it. We wouldn't have been able to enjoy it. I want it to snow when the ground is ready and it's going to stay cold long enough for it to be around for at least a couple of days. I just think snow is beautiful and there is such a peacefulness about it.
O.K. back to reality!
