Why have a 30 minute special if the only accumulation the Birmingham metro area is expecting is a dusting?

Because Birmingham is not the only group in their market area.

I am glad this is gonna be done and I will watch but I agree with Scott. Why, if the only area of expected accumulation is on the Tennessee state line.

Here are some interesting (and some what all over the board) opinions from other weather people around here-

Dan Satterfield in Huntsville isn't impressed: Rain will spread across the area this evening and change to snow around midnight or a bit after. A dusting of snow is possible, mainly in the higher elevations with up to an inch across Southern Tennessee. Much of Middle Tennessee and the higher elevations of Southern Tennessee will see 1-3 inches of snow by midday Saturday. It will stay quite cold through Sunday night and an upper level disturbance may bring some more snow late Sunday with accumulations possible.

--------------------------------

The Weather Channel is so-so: Rain and snow this evening. A few snow showers overnight - otherwise, mostly cloudy. Some sleet may mix in. Low 33F. Winds NNE at 10 to 20 mph. A slushy accumulation of 1 to 3 inches. (This is for Northwest Alabama)

----------------------------------

Huntsville Channel 48 agrees pretty much with 33/40: Rain will begin moving into the Shoals after 3pm and then will spread across the rest of the area through the evening hours. Some of the rain may be mixed with sleet at the onset. Highs today will be in the mid to upper 40s. Tonight is when the forecast gets tricky. Colder air will be moving in on the backside of the precipitation so a changeover to snow is expected later tonight. When the changeover happens and how much moisture is still around will determine just how much snow we will see. Right now it looks like accumulating snow will be limited to areas north of the Tennessee River where we could see anywhere from 1-4" by Saturday morning. The heavier snow amounts will occur across Southern Tennessee. Depending on the exact track of our developing storm system though, the snow line could shift either north or south so stay tuned for updates as we track this winter storm. Regardless of snowfall, it is going to be a cold weekend with high temperatures only in the mid 30s and lows in the 20s. Snow showers and flurries will continue on Saturday and Sunday.

-------------------------------------

Across the line in Tupelo MS, the CBS affiliate isn't impressed either: Tonight: Showers in the evening...then a chance of light rain and slight chance of light snow after midnight. Cloudy. Lows around 30. North winds 10 to 15 mph. The chance of precipitation 100 percent.

----------------------------------------

Finally- the NBC affiliate in Tupelo is on the same page as 33/40: Who Will Get The Snow??
Well, the $64,000 dollar question. I think the extreme northern sections of our viewing area will indeed have the best chance for snowfall. The counties that border Tennessee could get 2 to 4 inches before it is all over with on Saturday afternoon. Most of the heavier moisture will be out of here by Saturday morning, leaving us with just snow showers in the afternoon. From Oxford to Tupelo and eastward toward Hamilton, Alabama we will see some snowfall by 9 PM to midnight. Most of the snow will occur after midnight and we could see a dusting to and inch. Further south only trace amounts can be expected.

-----------------------

Like I said, all over the board.

I don't know when all the new models come out or if any will be coming out tonight. So, if anyone could give me an idea of when the next update will be in, that would be great. Also, Rusty, still hoping you are right, and that this thing stays south. Cause, that is good for us snow fans???Right????Stephanie, stop your snow dancing, and start your snow praying!

Heather -

I am doing a sit in (w/ prayer) as we speak. I am very reluctant for I do not want to get my hopes up.....

However, this is the best chance we have had all season.

Anyone care to join me??
