Deep Snow in Great Smoky Mountains

New York and Boston not the only places buried with snow. Look at these east Tennessee numbers from this morning:

7 inches on the ground at Gatlinburg with a low this morning of 24 degrees
9 inches in Cades Cove
16 inches at Oconaluftee with low of 23
41 inches atop Mt. Leconte, low of 4 above after a high Sunday of 10

In Extreme Northeast Tennessee, Johnson County, the Mountain City Weather Center reports 10 to 15 inches across the county with 1 to 3 inches more expected today. However, the upslope areas in the county may end up with a storm total of 18 to 30 inches.

By the way, Mountain City, the highest town in Tennessee, recorded a low of 32 below zero way back on December 30, 1917.

I'm the guy out in the DFW area... amazing to hear our weather guys are mentioning some type of possible winter weather situation for the upcoming weekend here. They NEVER say things like this... they are 30's and 50's kinds of guys. They say lots of polar air is on the way, just not sure yet how far south it comes. If even the weather guys in Dallas are mentioning it, there might really be some potential. They are never willing to sitck their necks out and they do not hold a candle to the33/40 weather team! BRING ON THE SNOW!!!! :-)

Hey Craig I am here in Alabaster and I saw where we might see some of that polar air might come this way But they don't know how far south it will come. I hope we get the snow NOT the ice. Of course the high today is a little off I'm setting at 42.0 they said we would see 47 today. Now I could not see what James said the high was going to be because my internet was out this morning for a short time.

Robert and John love the pictures of the Smokies. My Mom is from Ashville, have lots of family there and have visited these spots SOOOOOOO many times. Love to see pictures like this. Makes me want to leave now going up there. Added both links to my favorite list.

I live in DFW now but grew up over in the great Hueytown, AL. The smokies are my home away from home. Grew up going there twice a year every year... honeymooed there... taken my church youth groups there on retreats several times. But Mt. Leconte doesn't really need 40+ inches of snow do they?! Couldn't they spare us a little??

I do think they could spare a little bit!

I have been going up to the smokies several times a year since I was about 10-12yo. Husband & I honeymooned up there and go at least 2 times a year. We have always went up in January or February just for the snow but this year, a new baby changed our plans a little (too young to have gotten out and done much in the cold) so we are holding off until May when it's warmer. Can't wait for next winter to take her up there and play in some snow!!!!!!!
