Snow/Sleet Reports

Our SkyCam site at Hamilton is down to 38 degrees with a wintry mix... looking at the camera up there it looks like some light rain/sleet/snow mixed.

I have 57 on my thermometer here at ABC 33/40 in Riverchase.

Evaporative cooling playing a big role in bringing down temps in NW Alabama. Seems like where you see the bright banding on our radar... we have sleet involved along with some snow flakes. Very interesting...

I just wanted to express my delight and suprise. I had gone down to south Georgia to visit family, and I mean SOUTH GA. What a nice suprise to hear James giving the weather forecast for that area. I had to brag to my family! That is MY weather guy...hehe. And then again, on the way home while in Atlanta traffic, there was James again, but this time giving the forecast for the Atlanta metro area. Thanks James. Was so nice to hear a familiar voice while out of town.

Why are Freeze watches and warnings necessary this time of the year? People should have sense enough to know if the forecast low is freezing or not.

Seems very silly to me. We need watches and warnings about severe weather not whether or not it's going to 32 degrees or below.

Well Mickey you must not be much of a plant lover or a gardener! After the warm weather we've had..remember the weekend with the 80 plus temp..many plants have started to sprout and/or bloom, also many people have started planting or setting out plants..they need to know so they can take the proper steps to prevent damage. This is especially important for the peach growers and othe orchard type crops. It's big business and lots of money can be lost when the weather throws a curve. So Mickey I hope that answers your question..

Hey mickey just look at Debby's answer and you will know why we need a freeze watch this time of the year. That was a great answer Debby there are a lot of plants around the house that are blooming and I hope we don't go down to 32 or lower. :(:(

I agree with you Mickey. I would hope anyone who has plants, would be smart enough to know that 32 degree is freezing when they read or listen to the forecast. But, as you know, many people need the goverment to take care of them.

Thanks, Chuck. Obviously there are those who do not know that 32 degrees is freezing and that means to take steps to protect your plants, business, etc.

Bubba...it's goin' down to 31 degrees tonight and that there weather bureau's issued a freeze warning...we better sleep inside and bring the plants and pets with us.

Good Lord, give me a break.

Most of those plants blooming now are hardy perennials that are acclimated to the climate and can stand temps to the low and mid 20's...It's way too early to put out tender annuals.

I'll actually have to agree with you on this one Mikey . If you are a serious "Plant & or Crop" business person , or just a hobbyist , like my mom , with common since to know where the freezing mark is then ...... . Even in the fall season I have always wondered why a Frost / Freeze Watch or Warning . If you watch the forecast , or even if you don't , does this advisory just trigger something in certain folks for them to go 'Oh-really , its going to be THAT cold huh ,like you would for a severe t'storm watch / warning ? Still does not compare IMO . Just wondering .

I know my periennials are doing just fine. I haven't put out my annuals yet, that will come in a few weeks when I have time to clear the beds.

I hope, it will be warmer by then.

I agree the freeze warnings are a bit much.
