Storms Become Severe

Storms over West Alabama have become severe...

Large hail and high winds likely in the stronger storms.

Our SKYCAM network site atop the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse recorded a wind gust of 54 mph within the hour.

A wall cloud moved over the University campus, but no tornado touched down. Some trees are down in Tuscaloosa, but the damage was due to straight line winds.

The Tuscaloosa County storm will move through the Birmingham metro area within the hour...

Other storms are growing stronger over other parts of West Alabama and East Mississippi.

See our SKYCAM shots and conditions here:

If we have a county go under a tornado warning we will be on our live stream...

Now I am not saying that I am a pro... I have taken storm spotters class, and know the differences between scud clouds and wall clouds. I have the books and have studied them ... Why is it that a wall cloud can be spotted with rotation...and a Warning not be issued..... Do they wait for confirmation of it on the Ground?

Rusty...I am thinking the same thing! Yesterday I had been listening to the Jefferson County EMA, NWS, and Storm Spotters and I heard a few reports of rotating updrafts as well as rotating wall clouds and no tornado warnings had been issued. ???
BTW...you can hear them on 146.82Mhz and 146.88Mhz

Kenny, no ... I was Vhasing yesterday .. And the storm that crossed through and over the airport came thru Springville at about 1630 and I was all over it.. .Had great sight line and could see the rotating wall cloud , now becasue I couldnt see it below the tree line, i couldnt make determination if it had touched down.. There was no debres cloud, but there was definate rotation .... I called it into the station and never heard anything about it... Now if it was some jo Blow I might understand , but I have studied this stuff for years.... I know that if a Police man or sherrif says they see it , they call the warning... I thought this was the reason for having people trained and involved with thigs like sky warn.

James - my two cents. Showing the yellow or red background (for STS or tornado warnings) with the weather radar colors mixed in is very confusing for me during your live broadcasts. I think you should consider returning to showing only the weather radar colors on your usual map background.

What is the timeframe for the severe weather tonight and how far south is it expected to go? Our school has an outdoor event on Hwy 119 tonight.

The temperature in crestwood has decreased to 73 degrees with a dewpoint of 61. I guess the cloud cover and rain that is coming will diminish the severe weather greatly. I guess if we would have seen 85, this event would have been much worse. Is this going to turn into a heavy rain event? Also, when outside, the air does not feel as sticky as it has the past few days.

I agree, get rid of highlighting the county with whatever warning it is. I couldn't tell if I was about to die or I was in the clear. Ha.

I personally like the highlighting of the county under the radar scan. That way you can see the storm that is producing the warning at the same time. I've gotten used to it and I can tell them apart now.
