Early Afternoon Quick Look--1:10 pm Report

A few showers were developing across North Alabama early this afternoon, a possibly a few thunderstorms. The main ones were over Jackson County in Extreme Northeast Alabama.

A few were noted further south in Tuscaloosa and Blount County. The one in Blount County was NE of Oneonta.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: A strange event over the weekend right here in Alabama. Lightning struck a moving vehicle on I-59/20 near the Epes exit in West Alabama's Sumter County. The bolt of lightning completely disabled the vehicle, probably ruining the electrical system. However, the passengers were uninjured. That is why it is essential if you are out in your automobile during an electrical storm to be sure and not touch any metal parts, such as door handles. In olden days, it was thought that rubber tires would be an insulator and prevent a car from being struck by lightning. That was a myth.

Little Miss Molly hides under the bed when lightning starts popping. If I could get under there with her, I would.

"If I could get under there with her, I would."

Don't think I59/20 goes through Pickens County. Perhaps it was Sumter or Greene.

Glad you caught that geography error, Joe. I actually knew better since I was raised in that part of the state...just wasn't thinking. I corrected the error.

Thanks!

I've actually seen it hit a vechile..a truck to be exact. We were teenagers(so it was quite awhile back!) and been to Point Mallard Park for the day. The sky got very dark quickly, we packed everything up and was heading out with everybody else. On one of the streets leading back to the main drag a bolt of lighting struck the hood of a truck stopped at the stop sign on a side street. The noise was the loudest I'd ever heard! We all screamed and the poor guy in the truck was whiter than snow with eyeballs opened so wide I think he stretched his face! Huge black ring appeared on the hood immediatly. We were stopped in traffic so we saw the whole thing up close and personal! He was physically fine, got out of his truck but I bet he was a bit jumpy after that!

have seen that one time at the dealership where I work,it struck the antenna and left a large dent outward in the fender below it.very strange to see a bulge in a fender like that! Yes it totaled the electrical system.
