It's Summer

The Thursday afternoon map discussion video is available on the web, and on iTunes:

Anyone remember this song by War from 1977?

"Ridin' 'round town with all the windows down
Eight track playin' all your fav'rite sounds
The rhythm of the bongos fill the park
The street musicians tryin' to get a start

'Cause it's summer
Summer time is here
Yes, it's summer
My time of year
Yes, it's summer
My time of year"

Not many songs these days refer to eight track tapes...

It's summer. This is not unusual weather, hot and humid is what you expect on a mid-July afternoon in Alabama. Another standard this time of the year is "widely scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms", and we do indeed have a few of those on the radar this afternoon. The storms in progress are few and far between, but a few lawns did get wet this afternoon.

As forecast, temperatures are mostly in the mid 90s... at mid afternoon (2:00 p.m.) Birmingham reports 94 degrees. The hottest temperature on the state map is 97 down at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery.

PERSISTENCE: A nice short wave will pass north of Alabama tomorrow, and should bring a healthy round of storms from far northern Tennessee to southern Michigan. All of that rain should be north of Alabama, and around here will stick with a persistence forecast and mention a chance of widely scattered afternoon showers and storms.

I don't think it pays to try to be cute and forecast any specific change in the number or coverage of afternoon showers and storms in the longer ranges this time of the year. We will go with "what we know" and forecast mid 90s on a daily basis into early next week with a daily opportunity for a shower or storm in widely scattered spots.

TROPICS: The upper level low in the southwest Gulf of Mexico will be moving into Mexico tomorrow, and the tropical wave in the eastern Gulf shows no sign of any development. In the eastern Caribbean, another tropical wave is moving westward with little organization. Upper air winds don't favor tropical development in the Atlantic basin over the next few days.

Enjoyed a nice lunch today at Nikki's West (the TOP HAT BBQ was closed...they were taking a vacation!) today with Davis Nolan from WKRN-TV in Nashville, and Brian Peters and J.B. Elliott of our staff. Intern Drew McCombs also joined us.

The next map discussion video will be posted by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow!
