LATE UPDATE--5:55 pm

Just a few quick notes...scan down for earlier information:

NEW LINE OF SHOWERS at 5:55 pm extended from Athens and Cullman south to just east of Birmingham and down to Clanton. These showers appear to be along a cold front sweeping east through the state. Virtually no lightning with these.

LOW PRESSURE CENTER now over NW Alabama, near Florence and it is pulling the cold front eastward. At 5 pm, cold front was near Birmingham and has passed Tuscaloosa. Brisk west winds along and behind the front. At 5 pm, it was 69 degrees in Birmingham but only 48 with a cold rain at Olive Branch, Miss., in NW corner of the state and also at Memphis Airport.

Tornado Watch till midnight over on the east side of the state. The stronger thunderstorms now from near Heflin SW to Montgomery area. A number of counties on the west part of the new Tornado Watch should be out of danger soon.

NOAA has Shelby and Jefferson County under a tornado watch but ABC3340 does not. What is correct? Thanks!

Courtney...
Jefferson/Shelby were never included. The SPC listed them initally, but NWS/Birmingham excluded them before the list was issued because the strong storms had already passed east of the area.

Thanks for checking. The NOAA website removed them in the last 10 minutes. Thanks for the great job that all of you do everyday!

I don't have much longer to wait. It looks like the last line is entering Etowah County. Yippee! I have way too many windows open on my computer, so when this last line of storms/rain clears, I'm shutting down 3 windows!

Thanks, ABC 33/40 for your continued coverage!

I've been looking at some of the complaints about a bust. Tell that to the people in South Central and South Alabama having to repair damaged cars and the roofs on their homes or worse yet the probable tornado damage in East Montgomery. I do volunteer work for the NWS BHM as a ham radio operator and I have taken many trained storm spotter reports from the above mentioned areas this afternoon. I was working at the NWS when the call came across the ham radio of a tornado on the ground. A few minutes later a second tornado spotted on the ground. Chills came across me as I was relaying the reports to the forecasters on duty wondering if people were being hurt or worse killed. Luckily there were no reports of injuries however there is structural damage reported just to the east of Montgomery. So to you complainers that nothing happened maybe you should go to Montgomery and tell the people who had damaged cars from goflball to baseball size hail and damaged homes from the apparent tornado touchdown that this was a bust. Maybe you should also consider making good use of your spare "I'm going to complain" time and do something constructive and help the people who had damage.

Josh, that's for today, right? It says Monday at the top, but they *are* talking about today...yes??

I have a ton of things to do tomorrow and most of it means I have to go to a couple of stores. Please tell me that we aren't having severe weather potential tomorrow, too.

Say it ain't so!

Josh,

Thank you for your quick answer. Whew! What a relief. I just couldn't imagine more severe weather especially since the cold front is now moving through Alabama. I have such a busy day tomorrow!

Thanks again for everyone here on the weather blog and to our fine weather staff at ABC 33/40.

Carol

The storm threat should be out of here by late tonight or early morning. Maybe a few light showers in the morning then gradually clearing tomorrow afternoon or evening.

Hi everyone, Yes, I agree with J.B. Nathan, that was a great post. Well, it's been great having everyone here on the blog and the ABC 33/40 team keeping everyone up to date, but the line is now past Rainbow City. It's still in Etowah County, so I know we cannot be cleared yet, but I'm confident that my family will be okay without the radar and blog for now.

I have my SAME weather radio handy. So, until next time. Adios.

Thanks,
Carol
