This afternoon’s heat song is submitted by reader Mike Wilhelm. Mike writes: “I hope you don’t run out of summer songs before the heat subsides. How about this one from Sam Cooke in 1957? Paul McCartney released a really good version in the late 80’s too.”
“It’s summertime and the living is easy
Fish are jumping and the cotton is high
Your daddy’s rich and your mama’s good-looking
Hush, little baby don’t you cry
don’t cry, don’t cry, don’t cry
no no no no
don’t cry, don’t cry
One of these mornings you’re gonna rise up singing
you spread your wings and take to the sky
But until that morning there is nothing can harm you
With your daddy and mommy standing by
They are standing by, I know, don’t cry
Summertime, summertime, summertime
and the living is, living is easy”
RIGHT NOW: Birmingham has spiked up to 98 degrees at 2:00… Anniston is also at 98, while Tuscaloosa reports 97. Radar shows the bulk of the scattered showers and storms over the southern half of Alabama; the ones over the north are very isolated.
LOOKING AHEAD: No real change in the forecast. Looks like will be dealing with highs in the 98 to 102 degree range through Saturday, with heat levels slowly backing off by Sunday and the first few days of next week as the core of the intense heat shifts off the west. But, even then we will be in the 90s. No real chance of significant rain; afternoon showers and storms should be pretty hard to find around here in coming days. Just nasty Alabama August heat and humidity.
LONG RANGE: The 12Z GFS continues the idea of a tropical storm/hurricane just east of the Florida peninsula in the August 21-22 time frame. Readers here understand this is pure voodoo, but the model is trying to tell us that we might have an increase in tropical activity about 10 days from now. Things could get interesting out there in tropical land, so stay tuned.
